But, are we ready for 5G?
This is the litmus set. Once test time is over, the “fifth generation” of telecommunication systems (5G) is destined to be one of the founding and enabling elements for the European economy and digital society of the next decade.
With 5G, the perception of infrastructure will radically change: the network will adapt to services, and not vice versa (as it has been until today). This revolutionary conception of the web, together with the exciting promises of technological trends such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Big Data, and High-Performance Computing (HPC), is paving the way for a new smart network that will allow a capillary spread of an all-capable intelligence.
In the shadow of this brave new world, CyberEthics Lab. analyses the arrival of a real-time connected society, analysing how much and how technology enables significant social changes towards greater sustainability.
The CyberEthics Lab. team observes the results of these implemented changes with a critical perspective, firmly keeping true to the fundamental ethical and legal principles that are part of the company’s culture.
5G-SOLUTIONS is the field of action of this research. The project applies the paradigm of the connected society in the vertical sectors of Factories of the future, Smart Energy, Smart Cities, Smart Ports, and Media & Entertainment.
The experiments actively involve people who use the services enabled by 5G for the validation of the defined solutions. The CyberEthics Lab. team studies how society responds to these impacts, analysing and evaluating aspects such as the perception of innovations from a social-environmental-economic point of view and the consumers’ trust in the technological solutions and suppliers of services. This approach is fundamental for identifying reasons that underlie distrust of “disruptive” technologies and potential barriers to their adoption. The study identifies the aspects considered of primary interest for social acceptance and allows the validation of business models and the real potential of the solutions, before their commercial implementation.
